VISIT PHILADELPHIA Welcomes Media Relations Manager, Arturo Varela

Varela To Focus On LGBT Market

VISIT PHILADELPHIA® has welcomed Arturo Varela as its new media relations manager, focusing on the general and LGBT markets. In this role, Varela will work to secure editorial coverage for Philadelphia in local, regional and national media outlets, plan media events, and track coverage, while also shaping and executing the company’s integrated LGBT campaign. In addition, Varela will represent VISIT PHILADELPHIA at key LGBT industry events and conferences.

This seasoned journalist comes to VISIT PHILADELPHIA from Al Día News, where he spent six years producing dual-language content on a broad range of topics from arts and culture to politics. In 2011, he was invited to the White House to interview President Barack Obama. Throughout his career in journalism, Varela won several José Martí Awards and Professional Keystone Press Awards for his work.

“I am honored to join the VISIT PHILADELPHIA team and promote the city that I love,” said Varela. “As the media landscape evolves, so does the field of public relations. Both lines of work require strong research and communication skills, and I’m happy to bring my expertise to this exciting new role for me.”

Varela is a 2009 graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso, where he majored in communications and minored in film. He serves on the promotion and media working group for the Philadelphia 2016 DNC Host Committee and on the advisory board for Philadelphia Fight, a comprehensive AIDS service organization.
