VISIT PHILADELPHIA Reports Record Visitation To Region In 2015

Another Record: $10.7 Billion In Economic Impact For The Year

VISIT PHILADELPHIA® today announced the sixth straight year for record visitation to the five-county region: 41 million domestic visitors in 2015, with 88% here for a leisure purpose. The year also brought record highs for tourism’s economic impact, which came in at $10.7 billion for the year.

“Each year, more people visit Philadelphia, more people stay overnight and more people find reasons to visit every month of the year, not just during the warm-weather months or for big events,” said Meryl Levitz, president and CEO, VISIT PHILADELPHIA. “They’re also spending more while they’re here, and that’s a major plus for the region’s economy.”

2015 Numbers: (See chart.)

  • Greater Philadelphia welcomed a record 41 million domestic visitors, up 3.1% from 2014.
  • Visitors spent $6.7 billion in Greater Philadelphia in 2015, with the majority going towards food, beverage and lodging. This direct visitor spending:
    • Generated $10.7 billion in economic impact—or $29 million every day
    • Supported 93,340 jobs
    • Generated $612 million in state and local taxes, an increase of 2.4% over 2014, supporting priority programs such as schools and sanitation.

The 2015 Leisure Story:

  • Of the region’s 41 million visitors, 36.2 million (88%) were here for a leisure purpose.
  • Leisure is a major driver of hotel occupancy. Of the 3.1 million hotel room nights occupied in Center City Philadelphia in 2015, 32% were leisure stays—one out of every three rooms.
    • That’s 983,000 leisure room nights—up 287% since VISIT PHILADELPHIA started marketing the region as a leisure destination in 1997.
  • Saturday night hotel occupancy in Center City Philadelphia (88.7%)—a major indicator of a city’s strength as a leisure destination—was the highest night of the week for the 10th consecutive year.

Saturday Night Occupancy At Center City Hotels Tops Previous Years

This summer brought in big business for Center City, Philadelphia hotels, with overall occupancy topping out at 79.5%—the highest it has been since 2008. And weekend occupancy, a heavy travel time for leisure visitors, continues to soar. Hotels enjoyed record occupancy on Saturday nights (90.9%), and Friday occupancy (82.6%) matched last summer, showing that travelers are eager to get their weekends started.
