Travel Like a Prince and a Duchess in Philadelphia

Weekend Inspired By Prince Charles And Camilla’s Philly Visit

LOCATION: Center City, Philadelphia

TRANSPORTATION: By chauffeured limousine for royalty; by trolley, taxi or foot for others

TIME: Two days and two nights

SUMMARY: A luxurious weekend at Philadelphia’s upscale hotels, restaurants and attractions, as inspired by Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, and his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, who recently visited Philadelphia

HIGHLIGHTS: A tour of the Historic District, meals at the Fountain Restaurant and Nineteen and shopping on Walnut Street

ITINERARY:
Night One:

This weekend is dedicated to living luxuriously. So why not follow in the footsteps of Prince Charles and his Duchess, who recently made a five-star trip to Philadelphia? Begin your weekend at Their Royal Highnesses’s resting spot, the Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia. This award-winning hotel sits on one of Philadelphia’s five squares, Logan Square, where you can enjoy sweeping views of the grand Benjamin Franklin Parkway and its gorgeous Beaux Arts architecture. After checking in, head straight to the Four Seasons’ Fountain Restaurant. Not only has the restaurant received nearly every type of accolade available, it also overlooks the majestic Swann Memorial Fountain by Alexander Stirling Calder.

Day One:
Prince Charles and Camilla had little time to waste in Philadelphia and made visiting some of America’s most significant historic attractions a top priority. That meant a stop at the National Constitution Center, the world’s only museum dedicated to the U.S. Constitution; a visit to the Liberty Bell Center, where Their Royal Highnesses got a close-up view of the famous cracked bell; and a quick tour of Independence Hall, the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution.

Even though Prince Charles and Camilla didn’t have time to explore more, that shouldn’t stop you. Old City, once a busy commercial waterfront district, is now home to the best of the city’s past and the amenities of the present. Make time for a visit to the Betsy Ross House, a tour of historic Christ Church and a stroll along the cobblestone walkway of Elfreth’s Alley. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, stop in for authentic Spanish tapas at one of city’s hottest new restaurants, Amada. Or, eat at an Old City institution, Old Original Bookbinders, where the seafood is as famous today as it was in the 1800s.

After you’ve had your fill of history, hop aboard a trolley at the Independence Visitor Center for a two-hour tour of Philadelphia’s murals. Be sure to look out for the mural entitled Reading: A Journey at 40th Street near Pennsgrove, where the curious Royals stopped to talk to locals and community leaders about the 20-year-old program and do a little painting of their own.

Night Two:
Time for a swanky dinner. Nineteen, the new restaurant, cafe, bar and lounge on the 19th floor of the Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue, sets the scene for an elegant dining experience. Dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows offer panoramic views of the city’s skyline and beyond. The hotel was the after-party hotspot for most of the guests who attended the annual Academy Ball with Prince Charles and Camilla.

Just because the Academy Ball happens annually doesn’t mean you can’t experience the opulent Academy of Music throughout the year. After dinner, take in an opera, ballet, orchestra or Broadway performance at the oldest known opera house continuously in use in the U.S.

Day Two:
The Royals didn’t have time to shop for themselves, but they were certainly gifted by those they visited. Spend your last day strolling Walnut Street, where you will find some of Philadelphia’s most upscale shops, including Polo Ralph Lauren, Williams-Sonoma, Nicole Miller, Burberry, Joan Shepp and more. Be sure to stop in Tiffany & Co., where Prince Charles and Camilla’s souvenir silver boxes from the Academy Ball were custom designed and engraved.

End your trip with a deluxe French meal at Lacroix at The Rittenhouse. Located on the second floor of The Rittenhouse Hotel, Lacroix features elegant décor and a broad view of Rittenhouse Square, which combine to make the ambiance at Lacroix as enjoyable as the meal itself.
