Shopping Exclusives: Unique Lines Found Only In Philly

Indie Stores Maintain Exclusivity With The Nation’s Top Designers

Some of the country’s most cutting-edge, indie boutiques operate within the historic neighborhoods of Philadelphia, and many of them maintain in-town exclusivity of their favorite local, national and international lines. Here’s where to go for fab frocks, must-have make-up, sky-high stilettos and luxurious lotions and potions within the city limits:

Hipster Labels:

  • Vagabond – After nearly a decade, this Old City pioneer still scores top-level labels exclusively. It’s the only place in town that offers the shop owners’ own lines—knits by Stella pop and avant garde pieces by City of Brotherly Love—along with Scout, Ashley Watson, Slow and Steady Wins the Race, Motion Clothing, plus locally made necklaces by Leah D’Ambrogio and knitwear by Nunzi and Ezi. 37 N. 3rd Street, (267) 671-0737, vagabondboutique.com
  • Sugarcube – Elisa Burrato’s impeccably stocked hers-and-his boutique was one of the first in Old City to bring fashion up a notch. Among the exclusives here are Serial Cultura (for twisted 1980s printed pieces), multi-rising jeans from Found Denim, timeless tops from APC and neutral garments from Theory alum Navar. 124 N. 3rd Street, (215) 238-0825, sugarcube.us
  • Arcadia – Organic cotton, durable bamboo and reclaimed fabrics are the versatile backbone of this eco-conscious, 18-month-old Northern Liberties shop, the first and only in town to stock solidly on-trend dresses and separates from France’s Numanu, an internationally acclaimed design house that supports organic farmers and fair-trade fabric makers in rural India. Other exclusive lines culled by shop owner Ali McCloud include Naturevsfuture, Loyale and vegan accessories from Matt & Nat. 819 N. 2nd Street, (215) 667-8099, arcadiaboutique.com

Pretty Frocks And Such:

  • Leehe Fai – Irresistibly girlie fashions—think: Nanette Lepore, ABS—are this Rittenhouse Square shop’s specialty. And the boutique is at its best with exclusive styles from stylish good-girl dresses by Sea NYC and bags made of remnant and vintage leather by DEDE. 133 S. 18th Street, (215) 564-6111, leehefai.com
  • Third Street Habit – The only shop in Philadelphia—and Pennsylvania—to carry the coveted Etoile line by Bohemian designer Isabel Marant is also the only spot around to stock beautiful, feminine shoes from Les Prairies de Paris, hand-flocked and embroidered Mongolian scarves from Leigh & Luca and crisply contemporary styles from Swedish designer Rodebjer. 153 N. 3rd Street, (215) 925-5455, thirdstreethabit.com

Couture Collections:

  • Joan Shepp – The note-perfect domain of fashion doyenne Joan Shepp features eminently recognizable pieces from supremely important collections such as Balenciaga, Junya Watanabe, Play by Comme des Garçons, Ann Demeulemeester, Jil Sander, Yohji Yamamoto and Pucci—all found nowhere else in the city. 1616 Walnut Street, (215) 735-2666, joanshepp.com
  • Adresse – Like a perfect find on a Parisian side street, this well-curated townhouse boutique offers impeccable styles from some of the most coveted fashion houses. Owners Stephanie and Michael Lutzo are the only ones in town to fill their racks with Peter Som, Derek Lam, Nina Ricci, Lela Rose and Lanvin. 1706 Locust Street, (215) 985-3161, adressephiladelphia.com
  • Boyd’s – This 70-year-old stalwart has long been Philadelphia’s Saville Row. Today, Boyd’s three stately floors include the city’s only Govberg shop, women’s fashion from Zac Posen and Behnaz Sarafpour—and a pristine collection of exclusive, ready-to-tailor menswear from Armani Collezioni, Trussini, Hickey Freeman and Joseph Abboud. 1818 Chestnut Street, (215) 564-9000, boydsphila.com

Shoes:

  • Bus Stop Boutique – This stylish and fun Fabric Row staple is the only local store to stock super-funky kicks from Irregular Choice, modern-yet-hip sandals and flats from Dionella, the now-iconic wrap boot by Toms, youthful platform sandals by Fly London and earth-friendly (without looking it) styles from Terra Plana. 750 S. 4th Street, (215) 627-2357, busstopboutique.com
  • Head Start – Italian footwear—and irresistible sales—are the hallmarks of this corner store. The boutique’s private collection of buttery leather boots and heels is hard enough to resist—add the latest and greatest from Costume National, Ixos, Old Gringo and Fiorentini and Baker, and there goes the lunch hour. 126 S. 17th Street, (215) 567-3247, headstartshoes.com

Home Luxuries:

  • Lisa M. Reisman et Cie – Another hidden gem, Lisa Reisman’s elegant, two-story, just-off-Rittenhouse Square emporium is a gift-seeker’s best friend. Known for its French art, paper and stationery, this two-story shop has total lockdown on homeware and jewelry by Baccarat, Annick Goutal perfumes, Alberto Luzzi jewelry and candles by Rigaud and D.L. & Co. 1714 Rittenhouse Square, (215) 735-2781, lisart.com
  • Manor Home & Gift – For their center-for-all-things tabletop, owners Warren Leighton and Barry Terris have developed exclusive relationships with major and small manufacturers alike. Choose from Bernardaud place settings; Match Italian pewter; flat-, bar- and caviar-ware from Ercuis; brilliantly patterned, Pennsylvania-made porcelain from Marc Blackwell; and dozens more. 210 S. 17th Street, (215) 732-1030, manorhg.com
  • Kellijane – A walk-up brownstone houses extra-refined linens for bedroom, bath and dining room. Owners Kelly Monk Reed and Pamela Diaconis proudly take custom orders—and offer select stock and special orders of premade items—from serious textile designers such as Ann Gish, Barbacci, Kumi Kookoon, Garnier Thiebaut, Nandina and Alexandre Turpault—and those are just their exclusive lines. 1721 Spruce Street, (215) 790-0233, kellijane.com
  • Minima – Old City’s gleaming white refuge for modern furnishings set up shop long before Design Within Reach or Artemide came to town. Today, owner Eugenie Perret mixes pieces from up-and-coming industrial designers Jamie Hayon, Pie Studios and Daniel Michalik with limited editions of modern classics by Marcel Wanders and Marc Newson for Cappellini. 118 N. 3rd Street, (215) 922-2002, minima.us

Body Care:

  • Moko – This Old City salon-day spa isn’t just great for a dry haircut; it’s also the region’s sole retail repository for Patyka, maker of the world’s first certified organic perfumes; Brown Earth fair-trade shea butters; NHR-certified organic oils; Afghani Arghand soap stones, which benefit a woman’s co-op in Kandahar; and Pratima’s Ayurvedic dosha-balancing face care. 55 N. 3rd Street, (215) 922-6656, mokobeauty.com
  • Rescue Rittenhouse Spa – Danuta Mieloch’s upstairs day spa is the beauty secret among smooth-faced Philadelphians. It’s also the vendor of skin care with serious credibility, including lotions and potions from under-the-radar alchemists such as Valmont and Biologique Recherche (famous for their P-50 toner) and cosmetics from elite Chantecaille. 255 S. 17th Street, (215) 772-2766, rescuerittenhousespa.com

Artful Wears And Wares:

  • Art in the Age – This new gallery boutique is the creation of the ultra-hip advertising gurus at Gyro Worldwide.
