Halftime Report: Leisure Tourism Occupancy Having A Record Year In Philadelphia

Outlook: Center City Hotels On Track To Beat 2014 Record Occupancy

Center City Philadelphia hotels are enjoying a successful 2015 so far, with occupancy for the first six months beating last year—76.2% in 2015 vs. 75.2% in 2014 (January through June). All three major market segments (leisure, group, commercial) increased in the first half of the year. Leisure showed the most growth.

Leisure Occupancy:
Center City hotels reported record leisure bookings in the first half of 2015. From January through June, hotels sold 416,000 room nights to leisure travelers—up 3.8% from the first half of 2014.

“Leisure has been a consistent producer for Philadelphia over the past two decades,” said Meryl Levitz, president and CEO of VISIT PHILADELPHIA®. “These 2015 results prove that leisure travelers come here all year long—not just for events—because it’s always a good time to visit. Philadelphia has become a destination.”

Outlook:
Peter Tyson of hospitality consulting and research firm PKF Consulting expects Center City Philadelphia hotels to beat last year’s record for leisure occupancy—as well as overall occupancy—in 2015.

“The highest demand period for leisure in Center City typically has been the second half of the year,” said Tyson. “If that trend continues in 2015—and we expect that it will—leisure will break records again this year.”

With numbers for peak leisure months (July through October) and World Meeting of Families/pope’s visit still to come, Philadelphia is on track to have a record year for leisure.

Rates:
Average daily rates for the three major segments are up too. Commercial increased 9% to $197 over the same time last year, group increased 5.5% to $186 and leisure increased 5% to $172.
