Midtown Village’s Double Knot serves Exlir coffee drinks and pastry in the morning, followed by affordable Vietnamese lunches of bahn mi, broken rice, rice noodles or cabbage salad, topped with your choice of steak, pork, chicken, shrimp, tofu or meatballs. Come evening, a door in back of the cafe leads down a brick-walled staircase to a massive underground Japanese izakaya, complete with sushi counter, robatayaki grill and world travel-inspired cocktails. The dual-personality concept is the latest project from prolific chef-restaurateur Michael Schulson, who owns nearby Sampan and operates the seasonal Independence Beer Garden.
