Eastern State Penitentiary

Eastern State Penitentiary

When it opened in 1829, Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia set international standards for both its radical approach to its treatment of criminals and its distinctive wagon-wheel architectural design. Visitors can tour the 11-acre, Gothic-style historic prison, learn about life inside the cell blocks, see Al Capone’s restored 19th-century cell, hear stories of inmate escapes and view critically acclaimed art installations.
