O-Bon at Clark Park

O-Bon at Clark Park

Every summer, the Japanese festival of O-Bon (or Bon) takes over Clark Park in West Philadelphia’s Spruce Hill neighborhood. In Japan, people mark the 500-year-old tradition by visiting and cleaning ancestors’ graves, placing floating lanterns on the water to welcome spirits to the otherworld and performing the Bon dance. Highlights of the free, daylong event in Philadelphia include drumming and the group dance. Don’t worry—lessons get everyone up to speed.
